Healthy New Years Resolutions for Senior Citizens
As each New Year approaches, it gives everyone an opportunity to start the year with a blank slate. We like to think of it as the fist page of a 365-page book. What will your book be about? Resolutions gives seniors a goal to achieve and a sense of accomplishment. Queen City Elder Care has some suggestions for aging adults to make healthy living changes in the new year.
1. Reconnect: One thing we know for sure is that life is precious. If you are thinking of reaching out to a long-lost friend, a distant relative or even a close loved one you haven’t spoken to in a long time, now is the time. There are so many ways to stay connected today nowadays, there is no excuse not to reach out and rebuild those connections.
2. Spend More Time with the Grandkids: According to The North American Menopause Society (NAMS), babysitting or spending time with your grandchildren even one day a week can lower your risk of Alzheimer’s Disease! In addition to spending quality time with the kids, it helps to keep a youthful heart.
3. Don’t Delay Your Check-ups: Been putting off a visit to the doctor? Now is more important than ever to keep up with your health. Schedule any outstanding doctor visits early this year.
4. Try a New Hobby: It’s never too late to learn something new. Take that dance or yoga class you’ve always wanted to, learn a low impact sport such as golf or perhaps you can learn to bake or knit. The possibilities are endless!
5. Write it Down: Writing your thoughts and feelings is cathartic and we encourage you to do so! Also, creating a journal of stories of your life or even family recipes is a wonderful gift to your loved ones.
6. Get Involved: Attend local school board and city / county commissioners meetings. This can help you get to know the people in your community and give you the chance to contribute; even if it’s just in small ways
