In-Home Care: Avoid Caregiver Burnout with These Tips
When you’re caring for your mom and dad, do you feel that you have support from others? If not, you’re not alone. And those family caregivers who feel alone also tend to feel excessive amounts of stress. That can lead to caregiver burnout. Consider this, around four out of ten family caregivers who have been in the role for a year report high levels of stress. Almost half of all caregivers who provide 21 or more hours of care feel excessive amounts of stress. In-home care services could supply extra support in these situations.
Eat Well
A nutritious diet can help you feel better. Focus your diet on whole foods and avoid saturated fat, sugar, and preservatives. It gives you more energy, which makes it easier to handle the tasks on your list.
Aim for two cups of fresh or frozen fruit each day. For vegetables, you want two and a half cups each day. You also need dairy for the calcium, lean protein, and fiber from whole grains.
Get Enough Exercise
You need to get plenty of exercise. Recommendations are for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise each day. More is better. If you can’t fit in 30 minutes, look at HIIT, High-Intensity Interval Training, programs that break down activities into quick sessions of no more than 10 minutes.
Mixing up exercises is ideal. Take a walk one day, and ride a bike the next. Lift weights or do a dance workout a couple of days a week. Finish the week out with a Yoga workout.
Ask for Help
When you have brothers and sisters, they should be helping out as much as possible. Even if they don’t live nearby, they should help with certain tasks that can be done online or over the phone. They could help with bill paying, appointment scheduling, and prescription refills.
Any time they can come to visit, they should take that time to step up and let you take breaks. Go home early and enjoy a quiet night to yourself. Go out with your kids or significant other for a change.
Take Time for Yourself and Hire In-Home Care Providers
How do you manage to help your parents when they need it without becoming overly stressed? It’s possible. You just need to realize your limits. Respite care is one way to do that.
In-home care services help you avoid burning out. If you’re overextending yourself, it’s time to stop. Arrange respite care services to have caregivers take over while you take a break.
There are only so many hours in the day, and you need a couple of hours for yourself. Talk to our in-home care agency to make arrangements.
