What Should Your Parent Do If They Fall?

Reducing the risk that your parent will suffer a fall should be an important focus of your caregiver efforts for them, but unfortunately, they do not always work. Your senior may still experience a fall, putting them at risk of injury. Knowing what they should do and how they should respond can help to prevent injuries from getting worse, or them suffering a secondary fall.

Some things that your parents should do if they experience a fall include:

-Discourage them from trying to catch themselves on their hands. This puts them at higher risk of experiencing a broken wrist

-After your parent falls they should not try to get up too quickly. They may have experienced an injury that they are not yet aware of and need to take a moment to evaluate what they’re feeling

-Encourage your parent to evaluate all areas of their body and determine if they are experiencing pain, numbness, tingling, or other sensations that may indicate that they have suffered an injury

-When they are ready, they should take their time and get to their feet slowly. They may experience lightheadedness or dizziness that could cause him to fall again, and moving slowly will help to reduce this effect

-If you, a home care provider, or someone else is in the home with them, your parents should not attempt to get to their feet on their own and should rather rely on another to help them get up

-If your parent is alone or does not have someone who can reliably help them up, your parent should crawl or otherwise move over to a staple object such as a chair and use it for leverage to get up. If possible, first go to a sitting position on the chair and then stand up

Make sure your parent understands that even if they think that the fall was minor, they still need to let you and their doctor know it happened.

Elderly adults are more prone to serious injuries than younger adults, and some may not immediately manifest, or may seem less severe than they actually are. Particularly if your parents fell on their hip or hit their head, they need to be evaluated by a doctor to ensure that they are not injured or that their injury is successfully managed

Making the decision to be a family caregiver for your aging parent can be one of the most meaningful choices you ever make.

This is a way for you to show love and respect to your parent, and to ensure that they are getting all that they need to manage their challenges and limitations in effective, meaningful, fulfilling ways. The responsibilities of caring for your parent, however, can be stressful and, at times, overwhelming. Fortunately, you do not have to feel as though you are alone. Home care can be there for you. Starting care for your parent means that an in-home care provider can be with your parent to fill care gaps, offer support and companionship, manage sensitive care tasks, and work with you to create a care routine that is right for your senior as an individual. This can give both of you tremendous peace of mind and confidence as they age in place.
