Lung Cancer Early Detection Tips
October is Lung Cancer Screening Month. Did you know? Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States. Often symptoms do not show up until the cancer is advanced, when treatment options are limited. A computerized tomography, or CT scan, has proven to be effective in identifying lung cancer when it is most treatable. Even if you are not a smoker, you could be at risk for lung cancer so we at Queen City Elder Care suggest you know the symptoms and get regular check-ups with your health care provider.
Early Signs of Lung Cancer
According to the Lung Cancer Foundation of America, the following are early lung cancer symptoms that you should not ignore.
• Persistent cough (especially if you are coughing up rust-colored sputum)
• Shortness of breath
• Hoarseness
• Chronic bronchitis
• Chest pain
• Unexplained weight loss
• Bone pain
Are You at High Risk for Lung Cancer?
• Age 50 or older
• Current or former smoker
• History of 30 “pack years” of smoking. For example, if you smoked a pack a day for 30 years or two packs a day for 15 years.
