Kim Weber with John O’Leary at the Refresh Your Soul Conference

On March 13, 2017, our Director of Activities, Kim Weber, attended a day-long conference on dementia care called “Refresh Your Soul 2017” at the Cintas Center at Xavier University.  Kim is a nationally certified activity professional and as part of her continuing education, she is always working to keep up-to-date on the latest information and techniques on therapeutic activities for our clients suffering from memory loss.  The following is Kim’s recount about her time at the conference:

“I recently had a wonderful opportunity to attend the ‘Refresh Your Soul’ conference sponsored through the Parish Health Ministries.  The conference was titled ‘Alzheimer’s and Dementia: Overcoming the Struggles and Living Inspired’.

“It started off with a wonderful keynote speaker, John O’Leary who leads a radically-inspired life despite his early struggles with being burned on 100% of his body.  I had a similar experience as a young child when my brother was also burned in a fire.  His story really hit home for me because I personally know some of the struggles that a burn victim and their family can endure.   I purchased John’s book, ON FIRE, The 7 Choices to Ignite a Radically Inspired Life, which I will share with my brother.  In John’s book, he talks of triumph over tragedy.  It is truly an inspirational book about living life to the fullest.

“Loretta Anne Woodward Veney also spoke during the conference.  Her topic was ‘Being My Mom’s Mom’.  Loretta told of her journey through dementia from a daughter’s perspective.  It was an emotionally charged presentation from the heart.

“The final speaker for the day was Teepa Snow.  Her presentation was called, ‘Creating Days that Have Meaning and Joy’.  Teepa Snow is a true hero in dementia training.  Her presentations are inspiring to all caregivers and health care professionals.  I’m thankful for every opportunity to hear her wisdom.  She is a gift to all.”
