Home Care in Montgomery OH: Go Fetch! Food Drive for Homeless Animals Month

May is the month for Go  Fetch! Food Drive for Homeless Animals. Community animal rescue organizations often find this expense in their top two costs. This is a great reminder to help support those in the community who are making it a better place, and it is also a good time to take a look at how one might contribute to their efforts.

Volunteer Benefits & Seniors

A report published in The Gerontologist revealed a study that was conducted on 200 volunteers who were age 50 and over. The research revealed that those who volunteered six-plus hours a week reported greater feelings of productivity, increased social activity and a sense that their life had improved because of volunteering. There are almost always local non-profits that are looking for volunteer support in order to keep their doors open. If your parent is an animal lover, the local animal rescue is a great place to start. Schools, libraries, museums and hospitals are also organizations that are often in need of support. Senior Corps is a national service that connects those who are 55 and over with people and organizations that need their help This can mean volunteering as a mentor, coach or companion to both young and old. There are 245,000 Senior Corps volunteers.

Pets & Seniors

If your loved one is not able or does not have the inclination to volunteer at one of these organizations, another way to help support them is by adopting one of their rescued homeless pets. According to Roger Lavelle, a veterinarian and senior lecturer at the University of Melbourne’s Veterinary Clinical centre, “If this were a drug, it would be marketed tomorrow.” Dr. Lavelle was referring to pet ownership and the benefits that come from living with and loving furry friends. Not only do they provide companionship, they also facilitate walking and provide distraction from daily concerns. Pets have also been shown to reduce stress.

There are some considerations before your parent takes the plunge into pet ownership. If they have gait or balance issues, a pet may cause a fall hazard. It’s also important to consider if they have the wherewithal to take care of them.

Home Care Provider

If your parent feels that a pet would make a big difference in their lives but they cannot perform all the activities necessary for its care, consider obtaining the services of a home care provider. They can assist with caring for your parent’s new companion as well as caring for your parent by helping with the everyday activities of living and providing support and care as your loved one traverses through their elderly years.
